The Foundation was set up in Interlaken in October 1997 specificially for the realization of this project. The initiator of the idea, Erich von Däniken, has not only invested his own money but also donated a part of his immense archives of manuscripts, slides, films, books and research papers. After his death, the remaining part of his life's work will also go to the Foundation. The Foundation maintains a wide-range of contacts in Europe and overseas with similar organizations such as the "Archaeology, Astronautics and SETI Research Association (AAS RA)" as well as with sponsors and donors. The Foundation is the guiding force behind "Mysteries of the World."

The Foundation trustees ensure that the ideas, the knowledge and the wealth of research that the Foundation has in its possession are maintained even after the death of Erich von Däniken and that the education and theme park remains true to the statutes of the Foundation. The trustees therefore participate in the decisions of the Board of Directors of the operating company "Mysteries of the World."
